Tomorrow is the 1st Tuesday of April - that means it's time for the next entry in our monthly release series - Sendy's "Force Fed Funk".
With this one we're taking it way back. Back to the last century. Back to that magical year that Prince so aptly referred to as 1999. Remember the internet back in those golden days? It was a good time to be an independent artist, with mp3.com going strong and plenty of forums for artists to interact with people they might not have ever known had they not met online. That's when I first came across Sendy, who was going by Send at the time, on a Yahoo group of some sort. I heard this album "Force Fed Funk" and was blown away, not only because the music was incredibly creative and expressive, but because it was made by someone like me, sitting in their home, exploring with their own personal set up, - no professional studios, no A&R cultivation, no backing band - just honest, personal music for music's sake.
Years later this album still has a special quality to it that is hard to come by. To me, the best music is the stuff that takes you on a journey along with the artist. It's like someone grabbing your hand and pulling you into the crazy, trippy world they see in their head and pointing out significant landmarks for you along the way. "Look over here and you'll see this massive tree with leaves that look like peacock feathers, or over there where gravity is all wonky and everything glows psychedelic." Put on a pair of good headphones and go along on this journey and you'll get a very strong sense of that from "Force Fed Funk". The tracks teem with atmosphere, blending old jazz samples with dark, pulsing beats, spooky voices and electronic soundscapes to create sounds from a dream world that feels strangely alive.
This album has been re-edited, re-selected and remastered by Alexandra herself from the original DAT recordings especially for this re-release and will be available for the first time in full stereo quality. The record as a whole will be available for download tomorrow, but you can hear 2 of the tracks right now - the dark and harshly beautiful break workout "Sea of Filth" and the dub-tinged bliss of "At The Top" both offer a good idea of some of the things you can expect to hear from "Force Fed Funk". Check back tomorrow, April 6th 2010, for the full release!
