Largo
San Francisco, CA
Space Funk/Hip-Hop

--------

Drum machines, hip-hop beats, electro-soul, analog synths, talkbox and vocoders. San Francisco-based Largo is the side project of Chris Oldaker (Cats On Earth). Created in 2009, Largo's sound in inspired by a childhood growing up in Los Angeles, CA listening to 80s electro-funk, soul and 90s g-funk era hip-hop blasting out of lowriders and boomboxes.
Back then, artists like Zapp & Roger Troutman, Funkadelic, Cameo, The Bar-Kays and Afrika Bambaataa were using synths, drum machines and electronics to create soul music for a robotic future. As with all great things, that sound eventually faded into obscurity until G-Funk came along and appropriated it into an expression of everyday life in their neighborhoods, forever associating images of smoggy LA summertimes with fat drum machines, dusty funk samples and Moog synth lines.
Largo updates his retro-futuristic influences, along with the urban documentary approach of west coast hip-hop into beats that evoke everyday life in a world that is equal parts high-tech future and grimy gangsta's paradise.
We offer you two tracks to sample - first up, the undeniably funky atmospheric jam "Jupiter" followed by the pimped out anthem for space hustlers all across the universe, "Dedicated Funk". Enjoy...preferably with a nice fatty of that keyshia cole!
