Gravity Halo regular William S. Braintree has a new record dropping next month and judging by the previews, it's gonna be a good one!

The full length, titled "House of Meats" will be released on Braintree's own Vae Victis! Records and features some slick artwork by Vincent Giard. It will be available as a digital download via BandCamp, iTunes, Amazon and the like, or as a professionally pressed CD release through his BandCamp page.

You can peep the album teaser on the player below.  "House of Meats" will be available July 19th, so stay tuned!

I'm sure you've noticed the site redesign...a few of the site's features will be down for a bit while I migrate everything into the new layout. Search will be down for a few days, after which if you've subscribed to our RSS feed, you may see all of our past posts appear at once. Apologies for the annoyance, but its the only way to make the search work.

Hope you guys like it!

2011 is dawning and with that we celebrate not only a year of Gravity Halo, but the launch of our newest endeavor along with it - the Rotation(s) project.

We profile and introduce a lot of independent electronic musicians on the Gravity Halo blog, but we never delve much deeper than simply listening to and enjoying their music and being that this type of creative expression is a bit more obscure than what most people are familiar with, the end product you hear is only part of the story. Considering that electronic musicians typically work alone in the confines of their own personal studios, most people rarely get a chance to learn what really goes into making the tunes they hear. And then there's the fact that most of this music is instrumental in nature, leaving the listener with very few opportunities to really understand what a particular musician's motivations, inspirations and fixations are and what defines them as an artist.

The Rotation(s) project is mostly about pulling back the curtain of obscurity and shining a light on the diverse variety of people that create this music and the diverse methods they employ to do so. When you really stop to think about it, this incredibly disjointed, but somehow strangely cohesive "culture" of independent musicians working in relative seclusion from one another is a pretty unique phenomenon. There isn't much of a pay off for the people engaged in it...riches and fame aren't really on the table - even the superstars of electronic music are small fish on the world's stage, many of them maintaining day jobs to support themselves. There's no "rock star complex" going on, as most of them don't so much as even release pictures of themselves, let alone perform live in front of an audience.

So why do they do it then? That's a complex question that we're hoping to investigate with this project. We're giving these artists 100% freedom to document themselves for one month each and give the world a little peek into their creative lives. They'll post pictures of their setups, make tutorial videos, post tracks in progress, detail their individual processes, perform live web-sets...whatever they want to do, basically. Each month the blog will be run by a different producer and they will contribute whatever it is that strikes their fancy.

So, whether you're a producer yourself, someone interested in becoming one or simply a fan of the music, be sure to bookmark the Rotation(s) site, add it to your feeds and pass it around to your friends because it could be some mindblowingly brilliant shit...or it could be a total train wreck. Either way, you're going to want to watch it go down when the site officially launches on January 1st with our first featured artist.

Who will that be, you ask? Well, you'll just have to wait and see!

Any artists wishing to take part in the project can submit an entry form here. We're currently accepting applications for the first 6 months of 2011.

Wow, I kinda suck. Apologies to anyone who downloaded the Broken Pieces compilation already because my dumb ass zipped up the wrong files! Not a huge deal because the music is still the same, but the files I uploaded were not ordered properly and a few of them are considerably quieter than they are supposed to be. I went back and swapped out the zip file that's linked in the original post, so it's good to go now, but if you'd like to re-download the new and improved version, here it is:

You may have noticed Gravity Halo has been a little light on content lately and I do apologize for that, BUT that doesn't mean I've been slacking off over here.  I've implemented several new features to the site that should enhance your overall experience.

1. The forum.  Self explanatory.  Sign up.  Talk about shit.  Be awesome.

2.  Club Halo.  No, it's not a cheesy fan club - it's a virtual club set up to bring you live performances, simulcasts and DJ sets from independent artists all over the world.  Having a scene that's so spread out, it can be pretty difficult to see the artists you want to see playing near you, let alone on the same night at the same spot...well, that's what Club Halo is here for.  We're going to be putting together shows featuring many of the artists we post about here on the blog (and probably some others as well), so you can see a sick night of electronic music without even having to leave your shitty apartment.  Just what you've always wanted!

Expect news on the first Club Halo show soon.

3.  BigUps.  If you like one of the tracks we post, or one of the artists, BigUp them!  At the bottom of each post there are three little check boxes for you to BigUp the artist, the track or the post in general to let GH know you want to hear more stuff like this.

There are more updates to come in the near future as well, including info on our next release, so stay tuned!

If you have any ideas you'd like to see implemented on the site, feel free to hit up the forum or the comments section of this post and I'll try to make it happen.

Captain Ahab just released the free downloadable album "The Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts" on the Cock Rock Disco label and now he prepares to tear through Europe for the next few weeks, beginning tonight in perhaps my favorite city in the world, Amsterdam.  He'll make stops in Germany, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Czech Republic, Belgium and France, so European readers, make room on your schedules because Ahab is the shit live!  You can see the stops on his tour in our event calendar on the right side of this page or at his site.

Awhile back we told you about that Chris Moss Acid EP on Complex Sound Sagacity and hopefully you downloaded/enjoyed it because Gravity Halo is going to be teaming up with the crew, based out of Malta, to bring you even more releases every month.  On top of the monthly first Tuesday releases we already bring you, C.S.S. will deliver albums/eps from local artists in Malta as well as the foreign artists they book (like CMA).  They'll handle the CD release, Gravity Halo will deliver the digital.  You'll also see their shows popping up in our event calendar as well.

Stay tuned for a solid release schedule and more info about upcoming releases, but rumor is...the first release might be a little somethin' somethin' by Acidburp.

Back in May we released moto-SLAVE's debut record "Midnight Mass", an electro/acid/disco concept album supposedly set in San Francisco in the year 2064.  For those listeners left scratching their heads to discern any kind of story running though the record we're happy to point you in the direction of the new Midnight Mass Blog, an alternate reality repository of images, sounds, stories and happenings that piece together the world that moto-SLAVE's tunes inhabit.

The blog will be updated regularly with story chapters, artwork and music and with the new moto-SLAVE EP "Colors" being released here on Gravity Halo Tuesday, July 6th it's as good a time as any to get re-acquainted!

A new EP by Chris Moss Acid called "Bh303" has just come out on the Complex Sound Sagacity label and I'm sure no one is surprised to hear that it's pretty awesome.  Each of the EPs 6 tracks are monstrous in their own right, but I'm especially loving the 80s synth soaked "7 Years In The Future" and the Mr. Fingers meets Vibert all-star deep acid house collabo of my dreams "The Rhythm".  Absolutely sick release and it's free to download, which means there really isn't any excuse not to check it out.

As I'm sure some of you have noticed, there have been some updates to the Gravity Halo site that might interest you.  Aside from the new look, we've added a few things and are hoping to continue expanding the functionality of the site.

The most notable upgrade is the new Event Calendar (located on the right column of the site).  Here you'll find tons of upcoming electronic music shows from around the world, sorted/color-coded by region.

North America
South/Central America
Europe/UK
Asia/Australia

Right now the widget is in its infant stages and we'll need your help to make it even more useful.  We can't be everywhere at once, so we're looking for readers that can help update the calendar with shows happening in their specific areas.  So if you follow the live scene in your city and can spend a few minutes adding shows every few weeks, send us an email or post a comment below.

Enjoy!

Aight, y'all...it's that time. Today marks the end of the City Blocks Remix Competition, so that means it's time to send in your submissions. Upload your track using the DropBox below.

Send me your track
NOTE: you don't need to be a soundcloud member to use the drop box. It accepts most file types, but high-quality MP3 is preferred.
Be sure to fill out the upload form with your artist name and email address, so we can find you later. Please name your file based on the following format: "moto-SLAVE - City Blocks ('artist name' remix)". Clever remix titles are all fine and dandy, but we want to know who did the mix just by looking at it.

Submissions will be closed tonight at midnight, Pacific Time.

The excellent German blog Realvinylz.de chose moto-SLAVE's album closer "Weeks End" as it's Plate of the Day last week. Big ups! The site is in German and therefore probably gibberish to most of you, but hey...we's goin' worldwide, homie! You can listen to the full track on their page and, of course, download the whole album HERE.

REMINDER: The deadline for entries to the moto-SLAVE "City Blocks" remix contest is in ONE WEEK! Entries must be submitted to the Gravity Halo Drop Box before 11:59pm on Friday, May 28th, 2010.

Send me your track

Good luck and EZ remixing!

"Midnight Mass" is on its way, set to come out on Tuesday May 4th here on the Gravity Halo site and in celebration (and promotion, of course) we're hosting a remix competition for the track "City Blocks".

The Rules:

0. Listen to the original track...or not, depending on how you like to work.
1. Download the sample pack here (143.68 MB).
2. Remix the track to the best of your abilities. Use your own style/genre, add whatever elements you want (synths, beats, breaks, samples that won't get your ass sued...whatever) as long as you use at least one or two of the elements of the track. In other words, don't just make an original track and claim it's a remix, fool.
3. Upload your finished track to the Gravity Halo Drop Box:
Send me your trackNOTE: you need not be a soundcloud member to use the drop box. It accepts most file types, but high-quality MP3 is preferred (.wav is even better if you can manage the extra upload time).
Be sure to fill out the upload form with your artist name and email address, so we can find you later. Please name your file based on the following format: "moto-SLAVE - City Blocks ('artist name' remix)". Clever remix titles are all fine and dandy, but we want to know who did the mix just by looking at it.

Deadline: Midnight - Friday, May 28, 2010
(that's one entire month, so get on it!)

The best remixes will be featured on the blog and the absolute cream of the crop will appear on an upcoming moto-SLAVE EP along with other commissioned mixes by Gravity Halo artists. Who knows, you might even find your own original music being featured as well, so put your best foot forward, kids!

If you have any additional questions, leave them in the comments section of this post and they will be answered.

Good luck and easy listening!

I posted a few weeks ago about the upcoming moto-SLAVE album and now that the release date is quickly approaching I can start dishing out a little more info. The album, titled "Midnight Mass", will be coming out on the first Tuesday of May and will be free to download from Gravity Halo, keeping in line with our previous releases. However, unlike our previous efforts, this is not a re-release or a remaster, but a brand spankin' new album! Hopefully the first of many more to come from our staple of artists.

"Midnight Mass" is a retro-futuristic jaunt of electro-acid-disco that takes you through a near-future megalopolis brimming with dank dive bars, roving motorcycle gangs, designer drugs, neon glitz and back alley filth. Check out this 4 track album sampler to tide you over until May 4th and be sure to spread the word! Enjoy!

Deceptikon's new album "Mythology of the Metropolis" was released today on Daly City Records. Deceptikon (a.k.a. Zack Wright) has been producing hip-hop inspired electronic music for quite some time now and has put out releases on the now defunct Merck Records as well as his own Deceptikon Industries limited edition imprint - all of which are well worth the price of ownership.

Check out a sample megamix of tracks from the "Mythology..." album below and be sure to pick up a copy! This album's got a really sick sound, mixing dark, techy hip-hop with a little bit of dubstep/grime edge, lots of delicious synths, beats and a healthy dose of video game vibes to top it all off. Great shit and highly recommended, especially if you're into beat music.

You can also hear samples of all the album's tracks on the Juno Download page or by using the player below.

We're slowly trying to add more content and functionality to the Gravity Halo site and the next step in that direction is our new YouTube channel. It's already loaded with some great tunes by the artists in the collective, many of which aren't posted on the blog, with much much more to come. On top of that, we plan on delving deeper into the lives and work of our artists with music videos, documentary pieces, live footage and whatever else we can think to throw up there. Check out some quality tunes and be sure to subscribe to the channel so you can get notified of our latest uploads. Big tings comin', mon!

But I wouldn't be the hype man that I am without giving you a little taste of why you should click your ass over there and start browsing, so here you go...

As I've mentioned a few times before, most of the artists on this site are not new to the game. Many of them have been churning out tunes for 5, 10, even 15 years and have quite a few releases under their belts to show for it. So we've decided to dig into the vaults and begin re-releasing past records from the artists involved with the Gravity Halo Collective.

Beginning in March, the first Tuesday of every month will see the release or re-release of an album/EP from one of our many talented artists. Releases will be available to download as ZIP files including artwork, with streaming previews of select tracks to help you make your decision (as if you need anything other than my word!).

Up first will be a previously unreleased EP by awkward titled "awakened" from the magical year of 2005. I've heard it already and alls I can say is that it's fucking awesome, so be sure to check back on March 2nd for that. You can listen to it on your way to see William S. Braintree in SF that night!
