Not much to say about this one. Largo revamps a classic Biggie track for the early beginnings of the California summer. Having just came back from L.A., this track has a special place in my heart. Slightly melancholy, but still funky and ever so slightly gangsta.

It's Friday again and what better way to prepare for the weekend than with this new banger by Largo? Perfect track for a weekend cruise through the city with your windows down and your sound cranked up. Funky, bassy and chilled the fuck out - best listened to with nasty subwoofers and a popped trunk.

We're slowly trying to add more content and functionality to the Gravity Halo site and the next step in that direction is our new YouTube channel. It's already loaded with some great tunes by the artists in the collective, many of which aren't posted on the blog, with much much more to come. On top of that, we plan on delving deeper into the lives and work of our artists with music videos, documentary pieces, live footage and whatever else we can think to throw up there. Check out some quality tunes and be sure to subscribe to the channel so you can get notified of our latest uploads. Big tings comin', mon!

But I wouldn't be the hype man that I am without giving you a little taste of why you should click your ass over there and start browsing, so here you go...

Another new Largo track - this time in the form of a straight up bootleg remix of Beyonce's "Video Phone". No Lady Gaga on this mix, for better or for worse.

Filthy dubstep wobble, 8-bit synths, a little bit of funk and touch of beat fuckery...the original "Video Phone" was pretty dirty to begin with, but this remix is absolutely filthy! Some serious stripper music in this motherfucker.

The compilation beat tape from the Psych Rock Beat Battle in SF is finally available to download. A lot of talented producers flipped some difficult 60s psych rock samples into countless unique beats. Some pretty awesome work on here, including all 4 of Largo's beats. You should definitely check it out...it's kinda crazy to hear the variety of tracks made from the same pool of samples. Good shit!

Gravity Halo is back with a brand new track from Largo. "Work Out Electric" is more of that spaced out electro-funk that you've come to expect - heavy on the drum machines and the analog synths, blending everything from hip-hop to electro to old school funk and techno. Enough said?

Stream, download, pass around and enjoy!

Largo will be dropping some more beats (original tracks in small, 1 minute doses) at the For The Love beat battle this Saturday @ Club 6 in San Francisco. All the door money goes to raise funds for the documentary "Beats, Rhymes & Life", which documents the trials, tribulations and achievements of a group of youth as they embark on a journey to unleash their hidden potential and learn to use hip-hop as a catalyst for change, development and building community.

If you missed the Psych Rock Beat Battle last week, check out some of Largo's tracks:

For your listening pleasure, 10 beats by Largo from last night's Psych Rock Beat Battle. The first 4 tracks were Largo's submissions to the competition, the rest are recent productions added for the hell of it. Stream, download and enjoy!

A note to MCs: if you want to bust over any of these beats, feel free, but give credit where it's due and don't be a dick and try to make money off my shit. If you're really interested, hit me up and we can work it out proper.

Big ups to Phillip Drummond for putting on the event. Cheers!

Gravity Halo's own Largo will be competing at Phillip Drummond's Psych Rock Beat Battle @ Element Lounge in San Francisco on Thursday February 11th, 2010. Frisco residents, be there or be on my fucking shit list (or at least have a good excuse).

Space Funk/Hip-Hop

--------

Drum machines, hip-hop beats, electro-soul, analog synths, talkbox and vocoders. San Francisco-based Largo is the side project of Chris Oldaker (Cats On Earth). Created in 2009, Largo's sound in inspired by a childhood growing up in Los Angeles, CA listening to 80s electro-funk, soul and 90s g-funk era hip-hop blasting out of lowriders and boomboxes.
Back then, artists like Zapp & Roger Troutman, Funkadelic, Cameo, The Bar-Kays and Afrika Bambaataa were using synths, drum machines and electronics to create soul music for a robotic future. As with all great things, that sound eventually faded into obscurity until G-Funk came along and appropriated it into an expression of everyday life in their neighborhoods, forever associating images of smoggy LA summertimes with fat drum machines, dusty funk samples and Moog synth lines.
Largo updates his retro-futuristic influences, along with the urban documentary approach of west coast hip-hop into beats that evoke everyday life in a world that is equal parts high-tech future and grimy gangsta's paradise.
We offer you two tracks to sample - first up, the undeniably funky atmospheric jam "Jupiter" followed by the pimped out anthem for space hustlers all across the universe, "Dedicated Funk". Enjoy...preferably with a nice fatty of that keyshia cole!
