So this is my final post! It's been a productive month - I didn't achieve anywhere near as much as I had hoped...but there have been new tracks, mixes, live sessions and ramblings. So to conclude, here's an EP of the material that I worked on during my Rotation...

Afternoon all - hope you've all been enjoying yourselves. I'm currently sat in an office, staring out of the window at the glorious sunshine...
Anyway, last night I banged out another track...



It's called 'Metropolis', and it's my first track in a while that's not dubby, dubstep or any varient of it. I've had lots of Major Lazer on in the car, so that probably explains the snares.
I've had one comment so far - "fucking awesome", so that's quite nice.

Anyway, hope some more of you think it's "fucking awesome". It might go on the EP if some of you like it.

Afternoon! Apologies for the lacklustre nature of my updates over the last week... However, I have not been totally bone-idle... I started a few new projects last night, and my dubby "Rotation(s)" EP is going well!
Another live set will be performed and broadcasted next week, with hopefully a webcam video broadcast as well as audio.
I'm also working on a new track with guitar, noisebox, piano and synth, for a split EP with Awkward (http://www.awkwrd.net/) - the plan is to remix each other's tracks, in a distorted acoustic style. Samples coming in the next few days!

Recently, I've been making more mainstream dubstep music. This is because of two main reasons:
1) I've spent 8 years making music purely for myself and my own listening, so I decided to try making music for other people to dance to and enjoy for a change.
2) My housemates seem keen on it.

It's proven quite popular on Soundcloud - some of my tracks have been getting thousands of listens, which I can't quite get my head around.

However, this does not mean I'm going to stop making the ambient dub kind of music that I made for years beforehand - I'm working on remixing some of my more mainstream things into an ambient dub remix LP. I'll be uploading some of my dub music this evening, so if you don't enjoy this mix (or the acid stuff in yesterday's post), then hopefully you can enjoy that!

Evening chaps and chapesses. I'm Jon, and this is going to be my blog for the next month.
The intro from Chris covered pretty much all the basics about who I am, but I think I should probably start by saying why I started making music, etc.

I started in early 2003, because at the time I was very much into Underworld and Leftfield, and wanted to make similar techno-ish music. I also rather liked dub reggae music, but at the time it seemed like a vast swamp of variable sound quality recordings from another planet. Even starting at King Tubby meant trawling through 20 or 30 albums in search of that one classic cut. However I loved the tape delay, the drum fills, the snatches of reverberating vocal, and obviously the enormous overpowering basslines.

This was projected into a desire of wanting to create electronic but organic music. I spent more time worrying about delay and reverb than ever trying to create original sounding synths or drums, and the earliest recordings that I have were mainly acid house derivatives.

So here are a few of them:

I recorded this under the name 'Mosqvito', but I also used 'AC39'. Not too many people have heard these recordings, but I'm quite proud of them, considering I was 15 when I recorded these. They were all recorded live onto tape, using a program called Jeskola Buzz (which I use to this day). I would program in a series of basic patterns, press record and jam on the fly - muting channels, reprogramming paterns, adding effects and changing the parameters while the music is playing. I continued using this method until embarrassingly recently, because sequencing in Buzz is horrible (in my opinion) and I'm a lazy bastard.

So...Jeskola Buzz? It was the second program I ever downloaded for music production, after Acid Pro. It's buggy and massively overly complicated, and it's easy to get into a repetitive boring set process of using the same synths and effects, but I still use it today. Probably out of stubbornness to be different.

Over the next few weeks, I'll be doing sporadic live broadcasts that you can tune into, and I'll be posting them up on Soundcloud for you to listen to or download. Hopefully you'll enjoy some of it!

Hailing from Leicester, UK, 23 year old Jonathan Ace has been producing dub-tinged beats as Lucid Rhythms for a few years now and his sound is refined with every new release. His style is always layered with effects, atmospheric ambiance, live instrumentation and a sense of restraint that often goes missing in electronic productions these days.


Lucid Rhythms doesn't use a computer packed with VST plugins or fancy gear to achieve his sound, opting instead for playing and recording instruments, found objects, samples and anything else he can get his hands on. While his style has been trending more towards "dubstep" these days, I use that term pretty hesitantly because this isn't your typical big room bass wobbles and overproduced stock drums. What comes through most in his style of dubstep is the reggae roots, utilizing dub delay, sub basses, steel drums, skanking guitars, junky pianos and lo-fi electronics reminiscent of old school dancehall riddims.

Some absolute sickness in this dubstep tune by Lucid Rhythms. Filthy! Most people seem to forget the DUB in dubstep, but Lucid generally brings that Jamaican influenced sound and this time is no different. You can almost feel the Caribbean sun overhead, the sand beneath your feet and the oversized 80s boombox on your shoulder. Turn this one WAY UP!

Diggin' this Lucid Rhythms remix of the homie Asymmetrical Head's track "Forward Lateral".  Love that driving rhythm...just makes me want to do the Night at the Roxbury head bop all day long.

Same beautiful soundscapes, this time with some lovely dub bass on top of crisp, popping and crackling beats, doused in noise washes and delay for days. Just what the doctor asked for.

Back in 2004 the UK's Lucid Rhythms released the EP "Altered States" on AC39 Records and now he's put that EP up on his soundcloud page for all to enjoy. It's an awesome ambient dub record that really washes over you. Hints of rhythmic tracks build and wane, gathering intensity and then being washed away in waves of echoey dub delay. It doesn't feel quite ambient, but definitely doesn't present any straight forward beat music either. It walks a really interesting middle ground that takes elements from both approaches and blends them into a sonic landscape that is part sci-fi movie soundtrack, part drug trip, part dream world that evokes half-remembered memories of a blissful night out in the city.
